Humacyte Highlights Robust Expanded Access Program and Patient Testimonial for Human Acellular Vessels

Aug 19, 2021
  • In addition to the Company’s eight ongoing clinical trials, HAVs have been used in 13 expanded access cases for emergent life- and limb-saving vascular surgeries at seven hospitals across the U.S.
  • Video testimonial features patient who experienced a traumatic leg injury and received the HAV to restore blood flow to her crushed limb

DURHAM, N.C., Aug. 19, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Humacyte, Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology platform company developing universally implantable bioengineered human tissue at commercial scale, announced today the successful completion of its 13th Expanded Access Program (EAP) implant of its bioengineered blood vessel, the Human Acellular Vessel (HAV), in the U.S.

Under the EAP, the HAV has been used for patients with emergency vascular conditions including peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and vascular trauma, for which there are limited treatment options. The HAV is an investigational product candidate and is not currently approved for sale by the FDA or any international regulatory authority. The HAV is being evaluated in multiple international multicenter clinical trials in vascular trauma, arteriovenous access for dialysis, and peripheral arterial disease (PAD), with over 450 HAV implants to date.

In the most recent EAP case reported, the HAV successfully restored perfusion to the leg in a bypass operation in a patient suffering from severe PAD and at risk of losing a leg due to poor blood flow. The Company also reported the story of a patient participating in Humacyte’s HAV Phase 2/3 trial for vascular trauma who received the HAV to repair a severe workplace injury. This patient, a longshoreperson who experienced a traumatic leg injury from an accident involving a shipyard crane, was at risk of losing her leg due to extensive damage from the crush injury. The patient received the HAV to restore blood flow to her crushed limb and avoid amputation. The patient’s story can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/jTtZ5WyyHk4.

“When the artery can’t be repaired, we want to replace it with something that’s going to perform off the shelf like the patient’s own tissue,” said Michael Curi, M.D., MPA, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Division of Vascular Surgery, and site principal investigator in the Phase 2/3 trial of the HAV for vascular trauma and the Phase 3 trials of the HAV for dialysis access. “Humacyte’s bioengineered HAVs may be one of the key scientific breakthroughs of our time and have the potential to significantly change our patterns of treatment and be an important option for vascular surgeons to have in their armamentarium.”

“The HAV has the potential to transform the care of patients with life- and limb-threatening conditions. While our primary focus is on the progress, integrity and successful completion of our controlled clinical trials to secure regulatory approval, we also perform our duty to provide expanded access for eligible patients with acute medical problems,” said Laura Niklason, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of Humacyte. “Our robust EAP work also further demonstrates the utility and versatility of the HAV, and offers patients with critical vascular issues a limb-saving alternative.”

On February 17, 2021, Alpha Healthcare Acquisition Corp. (Nasdaq: AHAC) (“AHAC”), a special purpose acquisition company, and Humacyte announced the execution of a definitive business combination agreement along with a fully committed $175 million PIPE financing agreement. On August 24, 2021, AHAC will hold a special shareholder’s meeting to vote on the proposed business combination with Humacyte.

About HAV
Human Acellular Vessels (HAV) are engineered off-the-shelf replacement vessels initially being developed for vascular repair, reconstruction and replacement. HAV is intended to overcome long-standing limitations in vessel tissue repair and replacement – it can be manufactured at commercial scale, it eliminates the need for harvesting a vessel from a patient, and clinical evidence suggests that it is non-immunogenic, infection-resistant, and can become durable living tissue. HAV is currently being evaluated in two Phase 3 trials in AV access and a Phase 2/3 trial for vascular trauma, and has been used in more than 430 patient implantations. It is the first product to receive Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy (RMAT) designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and has also received FDA Fast Track designation.

About Humacyte
Humacyte, Inc., is developing a disruptive biotechnology platform to deliver universally implantable bioengineered human tissues and organs designed to improve the lives of patients and transform the practice of medicine. The Company develops and manufactures acellular tissues to treat a wide range of diseases, injuries and chronic conditions. Humacyte’s initial opportunity, a portfolio of human acellular vessels (HAVs), is currently in late-stage clinical trials targeting multiple vascular applications, including vascular trauma repair, arteriovenous access for hemodialysis, and peripheral arterial disease. Pre-clinical development is also underway in coronary artery bypass grafts, pediatric heart surgery, treatment of type 1 diabetes, and multiple novel cell and tissue applications. Humacyte’s HAVs were the first product to receive the FDA’s Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy (RMAT) expedited review designation and received priority designation for the treatment of vascular trauma by the U.S. Secretary of Defense.
